I have spent the last 30 some years designing, cultivating and weeding my perennial gardens. I am not your conventional gardener, following all the rules; when something needs to be moved I move it. I armor up and head out shovel, buckets and water by my side. My husband teases me and says my plants and bushes are like Velcro. Things just get cut, divided, uprooted and moved...then relocated somewhere else. So true.
But there has been a problem for the last 8 or so years, an invasion. I have lost my shield and carry a lance. I tread lightly in my garden; timidity has risen. Years ago I added some "bones" to the landscape-stonewalls and by doing so have attracted every garter snake for "miles" around. They frighten me, they startle me to the core and I retreat to my castle. Defeated.
Whether it was the "enough is enough" attitude which drove me or the realization those "harmless" visitors held MY power and passion captive, I knew I had to come to terms with it...NOW! I tried everything in the past: teaming up working with others in the garden, "armoring up", working solely in the rain, repeating over and over "they are my friends"...you name it I said it, but overwhelm and fear returned time and again.
Laugh if you will, but I sought the "magic" of a hypnotist. (Having trained as one I knew how powerful this could be). ONE SESSION, yup that's right...one. Now each morning I greet "Sam" and his garter snake cousins as they come to the "puddle" for a drink or lay quietly catching the morning's heat from the sun. No longer do I struggle to catch my breath when they startle me or feel my heart race. I changed my words; I changed my relationship with them. Instead of seeing them as the enemy invading my empire, I have signed a truce and welcomed them as "helpers" and healers to my garden. If I need to pass, I gently take my broom or shovel (no longer a lance) and brush them aside. Amazing.
What strikes me more than anything is why I let them TAKE my power or even more why I gave it away! What has kept you from your passion and why? It is by tapping into your subconscious mind and reprogramming the old story script with a newer positive story script that you will actually be able to remove the armor to feel the sun on your skin.
So with that I wanted to share with you some words of wisdom from Brian Tracy:
"Every time you repeat the words, "I can do it!" with conviction, you cancel or override your fear and increase your confidence. By repeating this affirmation over and over, you can eventually build your courage and confidence to the point where you are unafraid."
Ok, your turn...
